Our Community

In Southern Ontario, nestled between Lake Ontario to the north and Lake Erie to the south, lies the Niagara Region. A diverse municipality, blessed with natural beauty, recreational opportunities, culture, entertainment, shopping and a host of world-class attractions, it is no wonder that the Region attracts more than 12 million visitors a year.

Located in the middle of the Niagara Region atop the beautiful Niagara Escarpment sits the City of Thorold. Over the years, the settlements of St. John's, Turner's Corners, Beaverdams, Port Robinson, Allanburg, Thorold and Thorold South were brought together to create the present day City of Thorold. This merge of communities brought together over 8490 hectares (21,000 acres) of the best agricultural, natural and industrial lands of the Niagara Region.

Thorold, named after Sir John Thorold, a member of the British parliament, grew and prospered over time to become the city that it is today......an energetic municipality, wrapped in history and beauty yet still possessing that small-town, canal charm of yesteryears.

To this day, each settlement brings to the City of Thorold, its own unique flavour. St. John's with its winding, hilly roads and beautiful conservation areas makes it one of the most picturesque locales in all of Canada. Beaverdams, the final destination of Laura Secord's journey to warn the British of an impending American attack, is steeped in history and lore. Allanburg, the site of the sod turning for the building of the first of four Welland Canals, is home to Thorold's lift bridge. The quaint community of Port Robinson boasts the only pedestrian ferry service across the Canal. Turner's Corners is home to many agricultural farms and vineyards and is the crossroads to many areas of the Niagara Region. Thorold South houses many of the industries that spur Thorold's robust economy. And Thorold, with its numerous historical buildings, Flight Locks, accommodations and shopping district represents the authentic canal downtown area of the city. Together, these communities help to weave the fabric that is Thorold!

Thorold, with its population of 18,000, is only 120 kilometres (75 miles) from Toronto, 10 kilometres from St. Catharines (6 miles) and 19 kilometres (12 miles) from Niagara Falls and the U.S. border. Municipally and geographically, Thorold is bordered to the north by the city of St. Catharines and the brink of the Niagara escarpment, to the south by Welland past Lakes Gibson and Moody, to the east by Niagara Falls and the Welland Canal and to the west by the town of Pelham and the rolling land of the Short Hills Provincial Park.

In addition to all that Thorold has to offer, visitors are only a short distance to the more than 50 wineries, 45 golf courses, hundreds of historic sites, world-class theatre, diverse shopping and dining, miles of parks and beaches and exhilarating entertainment and attractions that make up the Niagara Region.
